C’est moi (Rachael) encore!
The second day in Normandy was wonderful. We left the hotel
around 9 am and drove what seemed forever to go to Mont Saint-Michel. It was
awesome in the true sense of the word, awe-inspiring. I can’t even explain how
exciting it was to walk up to these tall buildings all squished on a fairly
small island. The golden spire atop the cathedral caught the sunlight peaking
through the clouds. It was so beautiful. I will include a photo of the island
if at all possible. The photos on here aren’t really working well.
Also… There were SO many stairs. It’s beautiful and tall
from a distance… then you get to the stairs. Oh the stairs. I can’t handle the
sheer number of stairs. Needless to say my inhaler was necessary. The view from
the top was wonderful, but my legs were a bit put out with all the work
necessary to get there. Katie and I discussed how the muscles on the fronts of
our thighs were like rocks after the first 6 major flights of steps. We have
decided that we will have the best legs in our respective homes after this
experience is over.
After we had wandered through Mont Saint-Michel for quite a
bit and had slight drama acquiring sustenance for lunch we were all exceedingly
happy to be on the bus again. Katie succumbed to the magic sleep powers of the
bus and was amusing to watch with her mouth hanging open. Then after I
valiantly fought that same power and was defeated for a few minutes at a time
the tour guide starting talking about our next stop. Katie failed miserably at
staying awake through his spiel and I nudged her like 4 times with no success.
The tour guide seemed a bit flustered with all the sleeping students and gave
up speaking in French and spoke in English for a good minute. I felt bad but at
least I understood everything he said.
The second stop of the day was The Bayeux Tapestry. It was a
short trip but it was so beautiful. The stitching that went into that work
would be exhausting for anyone to finish. It was great seeing a tapestry that
old and complex though. I wanted to get a fold out copy at the gift shop but of
course they only had ones labeled in Italian. I mean why not, that makes
perfect sense. We don’t need any in English or French. Nooo… Italian. I might
be a bit bitter. But we saw another cathedral at least and I got a lot of
wonderful photos of it against the sky. The sky was so blue today and vibrant.
It made for great pictures.
After like 9 hours away from the hotel room we all kinda
collapsed and had delirious laughter time. Then the Katies yelled out our
window at the other girls across and way about going to drinks or dinner and
there was some confusion as apparently there was a man near us saying something
less than kind from his window/balcony to the other girls and no one knew what
was happening. Then the fire alarm went off, and we didn’t know that’s what it
was at first but eventually ran out of the building to find we were the only
ones alarmed by it. We eventually went in search of food and ended up breaking
away from the group to go have drinks then pick up a light meal at the grocery.
Sadly drinks didn’t happen because the bar we wanted closed before we got there,
but our meal of bread, salami, camembert, and plums was delicious. I ate like 6
tiny green plums. I fought with facebook trying to post pictures and failed. The
fire alarm went off again, and we decided we didn’t want to move. And… yup.
That’s about all that has happened today. More Normandy adventures tomorrow
after hopefully a better night’s sleep than last night. Oh speaking of which,
apparently I sleep walk now. Katie (my partner in this blog, not Roberta) said I
sat up in bed at one point then stood beside the bed for a couple moments then
laid back down. I’m slightly worried about a possible French demon possession
but hopefully it was just a one time deal. Anyway… Bonsoir! It’s bed time.
